From Bucharest pitches to American Friday night lights, Matei Bumbu is a 17-year-old Romanian athlete who turned a bold move to Arizona into real momentum in U.S. football. Selected in the 2nd Team All-Region at placekicker in his very first season, he is a name to watch for the coming years.

Short overview

Matei grew up in Romania, where he played football (soccer) for CS Dinamo București and scored a memorable hat-trick against rivals Steaua at just 11 years old. He then trained in Italy with coaches and scouts connected to clubs such as Juventus.

In 2025 he moved to Arizona and joined the Fountain Hills Falcons, embracing a new sport – American football. Within one season he earned All-Region honors at placekicker and became a respected teammate and friend, admired for his work ethic, discipline and character.

NFL, here we come?

What started as a dream and an inside joke – “NFL, here we come!” – is slowly turning into a realistic long-term goal. All-Region recognition opens doors to college programs, specialist kicking camps and more advanced competition. For Matei, this is just the first step on a much longer path.
