From Bucharest to Arizona

Matei Bumbu was born in Romania and grew up with a ball at his feet. As a kid he played for CS Dinamo București, one of the country’s most iconic clubs. At only 11 years old he scored a hat-trick in the derby Dinamo – Steaua (9–2) for the 2008 age group, earning the nickname “the little Dinamo striker”.

That same year he went to Italy for a training camp with Associazione Sportiva Cattedrale Alessandria, invited by football scout Mirko Feretti, a former Juventus Torino player and talent recruiter. There, Matei trained alongside young prospects observed by scouts connected to Juventus and other clubs, learning what professionalism looks like in European football.

New continent, new sport

In 2025 Matei and his family moved to Arizona, USA. Instead of stopping, his sporting journey changed direction. He discovered American football and joined the Fountain Hills Falcons, taking on one of the most demanding and mental positions on the field: placekicker.

The transition was anything but easy. New country, new language, new school system and a new sport – all in the same year. Matei approached it like he did every training session as a kid: with discipline, humility and a constant desire to improve.

His work paid off quickly. In his very first season in the U.S. he was selected in the 2nd Team All-Region at placekicker, a remarkable achievement for a newcomer in one of the most competitive high-school environments.

Character first

Matei is appreciated not only for his kicking technique, but also for his character. Teachers describe him as balanced and mature, while classmates voted him as one of the most liked students in his school.

His teammates created a giant poster in the colors of the Romanian flag, with his number #19, and hung it on the classroom door – a simple but powerful gesture that shows how much he means to the community in Fountain Hills.

Proud of his roots, Matei carries the Romanian flag with him everywhere, proving that talent, kindness and hard work are understood in any language.
